15.PLEASED AS PUNCH

If you’re “pleased as punch” you’re SO happy. Things couldn’t have gone better! And some of us think of a sweet and fruity drink consumed in triumph.

The true origin of this phrase is not happy and not sweet.

Never without his large stick, a tiny puppet named Punch and his wife Judy entertained the British in the 19th and early 20th centuries. Although originally from Italy, Punch and Judy puppet shows became much more violent in Britain.

With the audience cheering him on, Punch with his long jaw and large shark-like mouth took great pleasure in violently beating his meek wife and murdering several others during each performance - making him a serial killer.
